What should you do if someone passes away?

IF SOMEONE PASSES AWAY AT THE HOSPITAL

  • The hospital will deliver the certificate of death to next of kin.
  • Next of kin may accept delivery of the body via La Piedad Funeral Home, or the funeral home of your choice.
  • Funeral services proceed.
  • The deceased is buried at the closest La Piedad Cemetery, or in any cemetery of your choice.

IF SOMEONE PASSES AWAY OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL, DUE TO DOCUMENTED ILLNESS

  • The head doctor may grant a certificate of death
  • Funeral arrangements are made with La Piedad Funeral Home, or the funeral home of your choice.
  • The deceased is buried at the closest La Piedad Cemetery, or in any cemetery of your choice.

IF SOMEONE PASSES AWAY DUE TO UNDOCUMENTED ILLNESS OR FROM AN ACCIDENT

  • Legal authorities must be contacted, so that the body may be "removed" by court order.
  • Generally, the deceased must be transported to the forensic lab, so that legal authorities can determine the cause of death.
  • Legal authorities deliver the deceased's body to family members, along with the certificate of death.
  • Funeral arrangements are made with La Piedad Funeral Home, or the funeral home of your choice.
  • The deceased is buried at the closest La Piedad Cemetery, or in any cemetery of your choice.

To arrange for burial:

  • The plot owner or beneficiary must visit the La Piedad client services office at least six hours in advance.
  • Please present all required documentation: Copy of the certificate of death or medical report.
  • Burials may be held as late as 4:00 p.m.
  • You must pay the opening or re-opening cost, as applicable, and must be current on all maintenance fees.

BURIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The certificate of death or medical report is required.
  • Authorized burial ground is required, be it at the closest La Piedad Cemetery or in any other cemetery of your choosing.
  • You must contract funeral services from La Piedad Funeral Home or any other funeral home of your choice.
  • Funeral and burial services proceed.
  • Fees must be paid for plot usage, or to the place of burial or internment.

CREMATION REQUIREMENTS

  • The certificate of death or medical report is required.
  • A certificate of autopsy is also required. By law, all remains to be cremated must be autopsied. If the body is in the Forensic Lab, it has already been autopsied and no additional procedure is required. If not, an autopsy may be conducted by a pathologist. La Piedad offers this service.
  • A cremation permit from the Ministry of Health is required. La Piedad offers this service.
  • You must request funeral services from La Piedad Funeral Home or any other funeral home of your choice.
  • Cremation may proceed. (See Cremation)

Definitions

Certificate of Death or Medical Report: (Certificado médico de defunción, certificado de muerte and/or Certificado medico): This is a legal document, duly signed by the medical professional who determines the cause of death and other relevant information about the death.

Writ of Death (Acta de defunción): This is a writ of death that indicates the date, location and cause of death. (Civil Registry).
