Cremation

In Costa Rica, cremation is an ecological, clean and safe alternative to traditional burial. This service has recently grown in popularity, and has become a very common practice at a reasonable price. It is also a method accepted by most world religions. The Catholic Church accepts cremation in (Canon 1176-3 Code of Canon Law 1983).

• Our crematorium complies with all sanitation requirements.

• Cremation takes approximately two hours. Afterward, ashes are placed in an identified urn.

La Piedad offers several options to preserve the memory of your loved ones

Columbaria: Located at our Heredia and Moravia cemeteries, designed to store urns and ashes.

Also, our Escazú Cemetery offers two options for keeping your urn and your loved one's remains:

1. CREMATION PLOTS:
   Lots where you can bury an urn, with your family member's ashes, underground. Above, we'll place a headstone with his or her name.
   

   

2. TREES OF LIFE:
   Underground cremation plots, with biodegradable urns to store the ashes of your loved one. Above, we'll place a headstone with his or her name, and here a bush will grow, paying homage to your family member's life.
   

     

La Piedad offers the option of making these arrangements and paying for the service in full, in advance.

REQUIREMENTS FOR HUMAN CREMATION

• Certificate of Death.
• Certificate of autopsy performed by a pathologist (as required by law). La Piedad offers this service. Said certificate is not necessary if the deceased was taken to the Forensic Lab.
• Permission from the Ministry of Health. La Piedad offers this service.
